Tooth Extractions

Reasons for Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction may be recommended for several reasons:

  • Severe Decay: When a tooth is extensively decayed and cannot be restored with fillings or other treatments.
  • Advanced Gum Disease: Periodontal disease may cause loosening of teeth, necessitating extraction.
  • Orthodontic Reasons: To create space for orthodontic treatment when teeth are crowded.
  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth that are impacted or causing pain and dental issues.
  • Fractured or Broken Teeth: Teeth that are fractured beyond repair may need to be extracted.

INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWING EXTRACTION

DO’S
  • In case of Bleeding : Expect minor bleeding or oozing. If bleeding persists, firm pressure for 15-30 minutes usually controls the problem.
  • In case of pain; will be most severe within the first 6-8 hours after the operation.
  • Moderate to severe pain usually does not last longer than 48 hours,mild discomfort usually diminishes after the third day.
  • Please contact us if you experience prolonged severe pain so that we can help make you more comfortable.
  • In case of swelling: may occur following certain types of procedures. An ice pack should be placed on surgical site of your face for 20 minutes then taken off for 10 minutes and repeated. Anti-inflammatory medications, as prescribed also help decrease swelling.

MEDICATION :

  • Ensure you take medication on time after meals and only as instructed by operating surgeon.
  • Ensure you continue other regularly prescribed medication (diabetes,blood pressure etc.)
DIET

Food :

  • Soft, cool foods are most easily tolerated.
  • Avoid spicy, sharp and hot foods
  • A nutritious diet is most important while recovering and medication needs

Beverages :

  • Drink plenty of fluids. Cold beverages like milkshakes and smoothies are recommended.
  • Avoid hot liquids until the numbness has worn off, and the bleeding has stopped.

HYGIENE :

  • On the day following the surgery, rinse your mouth carefully with 1/2 teaspoon of salt to a large glass of warm water.

DON’T’s

  • DO NOT Check the wound too frequently
  • DO NOT Disturb the area of surgery - Allowing the tissues to rest undisturbed assists the healing process.
  • DO NOT Eat foods like Popcorn,Chips,seeds or deeded fruits that can get stuck in the wound causing an infection
  • DO NOT Drink alcoholic beverages while taking prescription medication
  • DO NOT Smoke at all as it interferes with blood supply and healing of the wound.
  • DO NOT – Over exert in the first 48 hours it may lead to bleeding and discomfort and try to limit physical activity.
  • DO NOT Use a straw It may dislodge the blood clot and delay healing.
  • DO NOT chew vigorously, spit excessively & rinse aggressively.
  • DO NOT skip medications because there’s no pain or due to any other reason.
